11 Year Old Brits Can Now Buy Cigarettes, Alcohol, Porn and Drugs Online »
Posted by: chris2930 1 month, 3 weeks agoWhile most of society are struggling to meet ends meet, one group are learning how to splash the cash like never before. These are the underagers, those under 19 who, thanks to Lloyds TSB, now have the freedom to spend their 'hard earned cash' (or should that be their parents?) wherever and whenever they please.

If a parent allows a child to have a debit card it's THEIR responsibility. For a bank to do so (without consulting the parent) is pure irresponsibilty (not to mention stupidity).
Can't wait for the first prosecution of a minor, who has a decent lawyer. Aiding and abetting sounds about right.....

Surely there is a dual responsibility here by both parents and the bank? At the end of the day, if I had an 15 year old kid I hope I will have brought them up to be a little more shrewd
1) At 15 years old, Viagra is probably not the best investment. (surely 15 year olds boys need a drug to get RID of their errection?)
2) Is there not enough free porn littered around the web?
3) I'd want to ensure they only drank quality alchohol, i.e. Guinness. (only kidding)
4) Only a fool smokes.

i totally think its the parents responsibility. if you let your 11 year old look at porn and buy cigarettes and drink alcohol then there is something mentally wrong with you. If you give a 15 year old a debit card there is something wrong with you and the bank. A 15 year old does not need a debit card if taught to save money at a young age. give them allowance in cash and they will be happy. but giving them a debit card with 500 dollars on it is saying here take whatever you need and dont worry about the money. what the heck is that teaching them? what are they going to do when they are adults and have to pay bills and rent? they are the kids going to be living at home with their parents until they get married.

Perhaps this shows that some adults don't monitor what their checking account is being used for. I check my account on line every few days, yes, Virginia, it's also important to look at what all family members are doing, including your spouse.

Why are all these people yammering about "responsibility?" No one intends to accept responsibility--not the kids, not the parents, and not the bank. They will each point fingers at the others.
But, of course, only one of the three parties stands to make a profit.

When I was fifteen, I was working and I always had cash. I didn't have a debit card until I was 18, but I was still in high school then. After fifteen, my parents didn't buy me clothes or give me money to go out. I had to do so with my money. I even paid to take myself to the doctor. If I spent my money on something stupid, I paid for my mistake.
As far as having a debit card at a young age, I really don't see the difference.
Teaching responsibility is a parent's job, not a bank's. A bank's job is making money, clearly illustrated in this story.

Simple case of a money grubbing bank. Issue cards to kids without their parent's knowledge and then say it's the parent's responsibility how the kids use these cards. Classic!
