Cesspools or lagoons are just holding places for the 9.5 million tons of hog manure that's produced in North Carolina every year. There's real potential for damage when the manure is liquefied, and then sprayed as fertilizer onto the company's fields.

    Robert Kennedy Jr. wrote about this problem in his book 'Crimes Against Nature'. He quoted the hogs as having 10 the amount of waste as humans.

    I'm just curious as to whether this could be the source of salmonella outbreaks.

          The key to effective use of livestock manure is to spread then let the treated field lie fallow for a season or two. The environment, insects, and microscopic organisms work their magic, but it doesn't happen overnight.

            There are environmental laws demanding that the waste be treated before it's sprayed on the crop fields---it's not being treated.
