I cannot think of a comment that is better than that one. It is OUR national anthem, and any criticism of the decision to sing a different one is justified.

It really didn't apply to us until the aftermath of the civil rights movement

Its a great song but not our national anthem.
Also fta: "The song is genuinely patriotic, and above all religious. If it were a "national anthem," our country's proselytizing atheists would go berserk."
I just like the phrase Proselytizing athiests! (good thing there are none here on propeller they might get mad)

"Unlike much of the rest of the world, however, black people can and do succeed to the highest levels of success and freedom in American society". I am so sick and tired of this form of reasoning. This comes from people who feel that Blacks should be greatfull for our ancestors being dragged here against their will. Yeah, Blacks have it good here. But they also have it good in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Britain, Canada, France, Belguim and other Western countries. America isn't the end all be all for Blacks. So Blacks have a national song that binds them together? So f_cking what! It was a song that was sung when the Star Spangled Banner did apply to us. That song gave millions of people hope for a better tomorrow. Plus, I don't know if you people notice, but that song isn't sung as much as it used to. I only hear on MLK day and Juneteenth.

We have a lot of great songs that praise our country but the "Star Spangled Banner" is our national anthem and nobody has asked the rest of us about changing it. When people stand to hear the national anthem that's what the expect and want to hear. If anyone else has another song let them sing it when it's appropriate.
