Interesting article. I only knew Edison (beyond the name).
My penny-worth opinion:
Plastic, the car, and power plants, - these things are toxic, but they are also beneficial.
The reason the world has a population of 7 billion right now, is because of cheap energy, quick transportation and cheap containers.
This gives us our present system of industrial development and distribution.
But I am not fond of nuclear bombs.
