Do No Evil – I have to wonder, as the state my father helped found turns 60, just who is defining what it means to be pro-Israel in the United States these days. Unquestioning encouragement for short-sighted Israeli policies isn't real friendship. Israel needs real friends, not enablers.
Further, anyone knowing to use his/her brains at an elementary level would realize that even if the "myth" above was true and all American Jews based their votes on "stance on Israel" the Jews comprise only 2% of American voters and it makes more sense to concentrate on the remaining 98%.
For such a small population, the Jews loom large in the attention of the world, and the ammount of hatred directed towards them. They are the excuse for the Palestinians not moving on with their lives, and the focus for Islamist movements "backward".
First, if there were no Jews the Palestinians would find another excuse to "not moving on with their lives". After all, Arab and non-Arab Muslims kill other Muslims and non-Muslims in places where there are no Jews at all.
Second, the attention of the world or even Arab hatred has little to do with the number of Jewish votes in the American elections. You see, each American voter has exactly one vote even if he/she is a Jew. This means that it makes more sense for those looking for votes to try getting them among the 98% of non-Jewish Americans than among the 2% who are Jews. After all, being equally popular among these two groups will bring 49 non-Jewish votes for every Jewish one.
> 2.To be strong on Israel, you have to be harsh to the Palestinians.
Unfortunately, this is not a 'myth' but a sad truth. In 1967 Israel was harsh on the Arabs and a cease fire was signed on the sixth day of the war. In 1973 Israel was harsh on the Arabs and a cease fire was signed after three weeks. Even WWII ended after five years of fighting. For the last eight and a half years Israel was SOFT on the Palestinians, supplied them water, electricity, food, medical and other services... and there is no end to the war in sight.
The sad logic of war is pretty simple: for as long as the enemy is willing and able to fight the war will continue. Being SOFT on the Palestinians will allow them to be willing and able to fight, will prolong the war and will bring more destruction and more casualties.
Actually this is turning out to be suicidal for the zionists - they seem to like killing jews. The whole world, except the US, has now condemned the zionist crimes against humanity. The US is a fading superpower and will no longer be able or willing to die in the mideast for zionism. The result? 5 million zionist killers surrounded by 600 million christians and moslems who are fed up with their crimes against humanity.
> 3.The Rev. John Hagee and his fellow Christian Zionists are good for the Jews.
Israel needs friends. After all, there are 1.6 Billion Muslims in this world who hate Jews and Israel and these Muslims have a lot of Jew-hating friends, from the Neo-Nazis to the American 'Nation of Islam'.
On the other hand, I have no doubt that if and when Jesus will come to Jerusalem and will restore the Temple all Jews will gladly become His followers.
> 4. Talking peace with your enemies demonstrates weakness.
Not at all. It makes perfect sense in case the enemies are willing to talk, too. When the enemies refuse to talk, however, talking to them is pretty stupid and totally unproductive. One has to remember that according to BOTH the PLO Charter (Palestinian Constitution) and the Hamas Charter ANY settlement with Israel on ANY conditions is UNACCEPTABLE.
Further, accepting enemies' demands PRIOR to any talks DOES demonstrate weakness and results in nothing but more demands. This is why Israel will not refuse to talk to Hamas or anyone else in case the other side will stop violence and ask for negotiations with no pre-conditions.
> 5. George W. Bush is the best friend Israel has ever had.
I'm not sure who believes or continues to believe in this myth except anti-Americans, anti-Israelis and Jew-haters. Mr. Bush is the President of the United States. His job is to care about the American interests first and foremost. He is doing his job as he sees to be the best. Neither his predecessors nor his successor, whoever it may be, did or will sacrifice American interests in order to please Islamist extremists, however.

From the article:
> 1.American Jews choose to back candidates largely on the basis of their stance on Israel.
> This urban legend has somehow become a tenet of American Politics 101, which is why politicians work so hard to earn the pro-Israel label in the first place. But it's a self-serving fable, cultivated by a tiny minority of politically conservative American Jews who actually are single-issue voters. Most Jewish voters make their political choices the way other Americans do: based on their views on the full spectrum of domestic and foreign policy issues.
I'm glad that 'Hyperbola" is posting this article declaring that her own claims were... well, "myths".
