Ecological overshoot whereby humanity exceeds the Earth's carrying capacity is the mother of all "bubbles". Within the current sub-prime mortgage and financial bubbles, and food and energy price increases, we are witnessing the logical and inevitable economic consequences of over-population, resource scarcity, inequitable and unreasonable consumption, and unsustainable economic growth. Growth and livelihoods based upon unreasonable presumptions of continued resource outputs from dwindling ecosystems is a dangerous, unprecedented "ecological bubble" that threatens civilization and mass apocalyptic death.

Resources are not scarce, and it is false that economics depends of the law of scarcity. Rather, economics is tied to THE PERCEPTION of scarcity or abundance relative to a number of factors. Oil is being discovered in quantities that outpace growth in consumption, and the US is currently running record inventories. But the perception of oil's scarcity drives up its price. And now that we have the insane misallocation of food supplies to supplement fuel, food prices are going up.
The world faces a much larger problem with perceptions that are misaligned with reality and with the misallocation of resources. End the insanity of biofuel and speculation in the oil markets and these problems disappear.
The sub-prime debacle has everything to do with greed and nothing to do with ecology or the earth's carrying capacity. Mortgage lenders had sound lending practices in place for decades. We are discovering anew the value of those practices.
