Psst, America did you forget about Iraq?

Do No Evil – We hate to interrupt this Hillary-Obama-McCain fixation, your focus on an economic down turn, high health care costs, exorbitant gas prices, death of the dollar or your latest dance team...or worse yet...American Idol, but put down the beer and chips or Ice cream and tune in. We are being driven to ruin daily by a war that is virtually ignored.

Once again you make us think beyond the monitory costs, the personal costs that society will be paying for years.

avatar

There's definitely a lot more to it than that. Sadly, though, it seems that Americans generally don't care about liberties, or occupations or dead civilians.

But when that inflation hits, watch out!

Clearly, we're getting that too...

and, if the war in Iraq continues, it will surpass the money spent on accommodating illegal aliens for over 40 years. no wonder we are bankrupt.

here is an example of Ron Paul's stance on illegal immigration: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/border-securi...

and, his stance on Iraq:

I think that is why no one will allow the Dr. to actually speak. They are afraid of the truth and will accept idiots like Le Muffette Jr, A racist bigot, and a liar in a pant suit.

Which America are we talking about when we say 400 years?

These United States are a little over 200....

avatar

Picky picky...I was counting back to when we invaded Jamestown, slaughtered or chased all the Native Americans we encountered off THEIR land, destroyed their economy and way of life and then set up camp and started populating the landscape with our illegal, foreign, pale-faced, "anchor babies." But 40 is still way the hell off from 232. ;-P

get real. I am well aware that you feel our borders are open to all...kumbaya on your dime, dude...not mine. you obviously can afford them. could you send a few $$$ my way. (this way I could afford to support your illegal friends.)

and, btw, please go to mexico and disrepect their immigration laws. tell me about your wonderful experience if you survive it!!!

"... you obviously can afford them. could you send a few $$$ my way. (this way I could afford to support your illegal friends.)"

--Calm down. They are way more of a benefit to us than not. In the overall scheme of things they aren't so expensive. ;-)

"and, btw, please go to mexico and disrepect their immigration laws. tell me about your wonderful experience if you survive it!!!"

--Until you told me, I didn't realize Mexicans alone were the cause of this alleged colossal financial drain on us. ;-P But seriously, I find it amusing that some of the very Americans who would rather die than embrace another language are perfectly willing to become indistinguishable from nations like Sudan, China, or North Korea when it comes to war, law enforcement, and civil liberties. And yet I'm virtually keel-hauled whenever I say Americans can't be trusted to own guns responsibly. ;-(

A few million emails, letters, phone calls to our errant media & their advertisers might get us back on track. Surely there are a few million who give a damn?

A few million out of over 300 million ain't going ti cut it jordon11.

It will if once started it continues to hit those advertisers in the pocket book. I personally believe there are a lot more than a million that give a damn and have already started doing just that.

I pound out stuff to the networks all the time - and calls

to Representatives and Senators too - but it's the lack of

media coverage that we deserve that infuriates me the most.

I get automatic responses - I don't think they really read

them - do you? So, have you got a plan? I'm game.

I've done the same Ante. I don't think enough people are doing it. Maybe organizations like MoveOn could start a movement, especially targeting the advertisers.

I signed up for media alerts from:

http://www.freepress.net/

I get frequent alerts about media corp. consolidations and

FCC - consumer UN-friendly decisions, etc. Honestly, I

don't respond to each and every entreaty to get involved,

but I have on quite a few. I mean, jeepers - you'll never

even know what's happening from regular news sources.

Take a look.

avatar

Thanks! I'll give it a look.

avatar

I must have signed a petition with them before, as they anticipated my information. (I see the FCC is up to its old tricks re: the internet). Anyway, it looks like a good site, & this time I'll pay more attention. Thanks again.

avatar

Nope, it'll take a National schism...like it did in 1968, likely violent confrontation, and many arrests. You'll remember the porky repub that challenged Ms. Sheehan? Certainly he felt his contribution to America's security was much more important than hers! Unfortunately there are many Roves and Coulters out there, that will lead from the bunker, while the volksturmen faithfully carry the banner to a futile and destructive end.

Until the American public get their heads out of their anterior orfice and start to make noise, nothing will change. We desperatly need a viable third party canditate to run in the (I hope) upcoming elections......

We need the introduction of an unbiased - and FREE, not

subscriber based - media that will ask questions and bring

up subjects that are not on the Top Ten of the media

conglomerates.

I heard just this morning that CBS is mulling over using

reports and reporters from CNN instead of their own.

Tighter and tighter the noose around our dream of Democracy

- you do not have a free society if you don't have a curious - rather than questionable media.

first step - abolish the FCC!

In the FCC we have a handful of people who hand out and deny licenses to broadcast - a permission slip from the government.

What's the result?

Only the richest and most powerful get to tell us what's news and opinion over the airwaves....and they seem content with being a mouthpiece for the government.

And they have trashed the laws that allowed us access

to a varied interpretation of events in the news by

allowing more newspapers,TV stations, radio stations

and our access to the internet to be owned by ONE

"media mogul". We used to have restrictions on just

how many outlets could be concentrated under one

corporation. There was a very important reason for

those restrictions that are dangerously lacking today.

Thanks for nothing FCC!

avatar
Reply

But surely you're aware that the FCC is accountable to the Congress which is comprised of elected officials for whom *we* (the American public) voted. The agency can't act without the approval of Congress--and I think we all know who has been in control of Congress for the better part of the last decade...

And what will you do to make sure big money doesn't get to that candidate? And I don't care who is elected President. Nothing will change because Congress is dysfunctional as hell! The only thing that will save this country is EDUCATED people, and they won't be educated on squat as long as the media is under the control of a few rich people with their own agendas.

avatar

absolutely right. And unfortunately, we won't be seeing our children well educated as long as their education (or indoctrination) is under the control of the US federal government.

It's in their interests to make sure our children don't do well in school...

Truly! How else could Gates make profits selling

Microsoft certification classes at the universities

and then go before congress and demand that they

double the number of H1B visas available?

Telling congress that there are not enough U.S.

citizens with the knowledge to fill the available

positions. Mr.Gates might want to use his well-publicized philanthropy to lower the profit percentage enjoyed

by Microsoft - they are very expensive classes.

But then he'd lose his arguement for bringing in

low paid white collar workers from India, etc.

We just keep reelecting the same bought and paid for people in both houses of congress. Stop reelecting them, let them go home and find honest work. Get new people in congress each election cycle. If we would get them out promptly they would not have time to establish a power base!!!!

avatar

It would do no good. It never has. Ron Paul isn't EVEN a third party candidate, he KNOWS how to properly handle this, and yet: 13-18% in the polls. I'm sorry - I really am - but it seems the vast majority of people in this country really ARE in the thrall of the media and will do EXACTLY what the magic box tells them to.

avatar
Reply

"And I don't care who is elected President. Nothing will change because Congress is dysfunctional as hell!"

--Well, it only seems dysfunctional at the moment because there is major gridlock. As we've seen over the past 8 years, Congress can "accomplish" a lot of things when one party has a significant majority. Unfortunately, the agenda it accomplishes isn't always beneficial to the country nor does it necessarily reflect the will of the American public. That doesn't make it, by definition, dysfunctional. What's dysfunctional is an extremely poorly educated electorate re-electing people who have been destroying the country and expecting a different result. This, I do not understand.

I have read alot of comments on this war and one that usually shows up sometime in each story is if we don't fight them over there we will be fighting them here in this country. the more I read of how the vets from this war are being treated and also the number that are taking their own lives after they come home it makes me wonder if someday soon there will be violence in your country because of this war. To me the battle that has yet to be fought will be not in some foreign county but on the streets of your nation, and if you are in doubt of that just look at what happened in my country of Canada after the first world war, men came home to no jobs and it did not take many years before we had the Winnipeg Riots.

A well written and timely piece. I am afraid this information is much like secret information hidden in dark government archives no politico wants discovered. Therefore, they do all they can to squelch the information so that it never comes to light. The truth I am afraid is that we have a do nothing set of politicians running our government who care more about lining their own pockets than they do about the direction our country is taking. I am afraid we are going to do nothing about Iraq, let alone our returning soldiers. Since we cannot garner a third party candidate worthy of the task, I have kept hoping Obama may be the fresh breath of air we need to lead us toward real change. Certainly McCain and Clinton offer nothing more than the status quo and Corporate dominance. Reminded of a quote from a Classic, Fiddler on the Roof, "wouldn't this be a good time for the Messiah to come?"

Excellent article. With all the other problems at home many have forgotten the war. Now that things are starting to heat up there again the focus will shift. We need to find a way to end this thing. I really feel that if we leave today or if we leave in 10 years the outcome will be the same. You will see a civil war and the country will end up a theocracy like Iran.

"We need to find a way to end this thing."

While I agree I don't think we should blow our load early and end up with a head-ache nine months later.

I feel Iraq has been making progress and if we did pull out today it COULD be disastrous. Then again it could be good as the Iraqi people realize it's all on them to fix their country, but IMO I think we owe it to Iraq to finish the job we started.

I've already lost two close friends in Iraq and I don't want their lives to be in vain.

Perhaps the Iraqis should be asked whether they want the job finished.

Newbie, I feel your pain, but I must say that, in my opinion, their lives will not have been lost in vain if they lead to a definitive withdrawal of our troops and no further lives lost! We will never achieve the unrealistic goal set for democracy in Iraq. The will and determination of the Iraqi people and their neighbors was grossly underestimated by the Bush administration. We can either end it now, or continue to bleed our country of its best and brightest potential in a senseless, useless war.

The root reason for continuing this fiasco is to save face, simply put, "pride." And the Bible clearly states that pride goeth before a fall. We are already on the precipice of a very slippery slope and teetering!

avatar

you're absolutely right. It doesn't matter if we leave today, tomorrow or in a decade. Iraq is already a huge mess. Killing more people won't fix it, and killing more people won't make it right.

The time to end this madness is now.

I remind myself that in the beginning it was "the threat" -

then it was "fight them there, instead of here" and as

always when you know there will be hundreds of thousands

of civilian deaths - you throw in "liberty and Democracy"

for the citizens of our prospective target.

When's the last time you heard of anything good happening

for the people of Iraq? Got blame? It's like a sign with a

blinking arrow to pile on - "This is the place!"

I don't think so. So long as all they are offering is

opinion, or news, and not products I think it's okay.

The Nation usually makes a plea for donations as well - just like my PBS radio station this week...groan! I know they have to - but it's getting harder to get support with our current economic crunch, so it is lasting a particularly long time. I already gave and I'd like my Jazz back - lol!

I've not forgotten our Brothers and Sisters were dispatched over a damned lie! I shall never forget what Bush did to our word towards our allies; nor, shall I ever forgive that slime-bucket-carpet-bagger for what he did to the REAL Texas!

Ask how many Texicans pocketed a damned penny after Enron stole all those 401-Ks of the hundreds, if not thousands, of employees' retirement funds -- that our own government insures against these acts of stealing from those who worked for it.

GOP, you must be tickled to death the very people who voted for your sorry ass president, are doing so without the mega-bucks???
