Six Masai warriors running the London Marathon have been warned that hunting lions will seem easy compared to dealing with the English. The men have been given a four-page cultural briefing of dos and don'ts.

April 2, 2008, 6:39 p.m.This is a great story; it actually says as much about the oddness of British civilisation - representing "Western Culture" - as it does about the colourful behaviour of the Masai. There will be plenty of opportunities for things to go awry.. I heard this story on the BBC World Service this evening and nearly fell out of bed laughing. Had to get up again to share it!

I don't know too much more about Masai customs but they seem to be very "sharing people" - as in if you like someone's bracelet you can take it from them. Whether this applies to wives too I don't know..
This source is a pretty tabloid production these days but I did like the picture of the mass start of rhe race and was imagining what kind of experience that would be for our tribal friends.

April 2, 2008, 9:23 p.m.I am always careful to wear underpants with my blankets especially when I'm visiting an English bar. And I see nothing wrong with walking up to someone and taking a pretty bracelet if it matches my blankets. It's not wrong as long as I return it when I'm done.

I had one bracelet for a very long time and wore it at all times but there came a time when I knew I had to pass it on. It became imperative and one day in a vegetarian restaurant in London I saw someone who I thought should have it. When I finished my meal and was leaving I asked the waitress to transmit it and left without looking back.
It had been very lucky for me; it was was bent in one place where it caught on a bush and held me as I was falling down a cliff at Big Sur.
Writing about it now I'd love just to see it for a moment and remember it fully. 4 am..

April 2, 2008, 9:43 p.m.The english are a different sort but not in a bad way, they at times don't see the humor in things and wish everything to run smoothly, I wonder if the underpants problem is why they have a problem with us from Scotland and our kilts, no underwear allowed.

April 3, 2008, 8:42 a.m.Local customs are like local jokes...I've told 'funnies' that almost got me run out of town! The British are a strange lot, say what, with the stiff upper lip and all that rot. The Dinka tribes have a lot in common w/ the Masai. They have many antiseptic uses for urine and a novel (to me) way of stimulating cows for reproduction. Let's just say it's a rite of passage for adolescent males. These cutoms seem taboo to us westerners, but work very well for them.

Oh yes! Its a terrible feeling when you gaze around at your audience of new-found friends and see an expression of disgust on every face..
You know that you have SERIOUSLY offended against the mores!!
Sometimes that you should limit your time in town to how long it will take you to pack and when the next bus is out of town - to ANYWHERE.
Can you imagine the TV coverage of the marathon if these guys were running in their robes with appendages dangling?? What if one of them won? - I don't mean for appendage, I mean the race.. The Duchess of Kent or whoever the Beeb lays on to award the prizes would be crimson.
Jolly good idea that 4-page booklet! I wonder if it covered EVERYTHING?
