The details of his dream/confession were nowhere close to matching the actual events of the victims death, rape, or the location of her body.

Let's see... both guys confessed to the killing... but they lied about how it happened. Why would both of them confess if they aren't guilty?
However, this pretty much speaks volumes for the intelligence of the police:
"the owner said Fontenot's story was impossible, as he himself had burned down the house 10 months before the murder."
Hello? Ever think about just asking the fire department or owner about the place before you launch into an investigation and start sifting through the ashes? A phonecall could've answered questions.
Occasionally people confess to something they didn't do... but two guys confess to doing something they didn't do?
