Those stacks look like the ones in El Paso, Texas. The copper manufacturing company is now requesting to start their business back up and running. Those stack emit lead and other cemicals.

    Thanks for the article!

Sarcasm on: Lead schmed, mercury schmercury. So what? Hey, asswipes, it's LEGAL! Live with it! Why do you think we gave millions to the Bush campaign? Why do you think we continue to give millions to GOP Neocon politicians? They paid off like slot machines by getting rid of B.J. Clinton era pollution laws! Damn! That Democrap was costing us big bucks with his higher corporate tax rates and his silly ass balanced budgets and Federal surplus. Plus that pervert had all but eliminated Reagan's huge National Debt.

Love that little Bush! Whoooeeeee! We got huge personal and corporate tax breaks! Sure, we borrowed 10 trillion from you working slobs to get it. Too damn bad! Hey, YOU elected him TWICE..for us! And that Iraq war $$$$! Sweet.

Ol' Karl really got the farmers in the midwest and the simpletons in the old "Solid South". FOX News helps out, too! Yup, controlling ALL the mass media is cool. Thanks, Reagan for deregulating it so we could own more outlets.

And just missing at number 21 is Al Gore with a combination of mansions and hundreds of globe trotting private jet flights.

CNN did a good show tonight on lead air pollution. (the Broken Government series). First time I've watched them in over a year, & am impressed that someone is finally bringing things out mainstream. I'm thankful not to be living in the areas this article states. Wouldn't want to have raised my children there.

Four of those mines are in north and northeast Nevada right where the quake happened. Could they disturb any fault lines?

I'd like to see CNN or someone do a report on the compact fluorescent bulbs or(CFLs) which have been mandated

I asked several of my friends about the mercury in the CFLs and the need to recycle them instead of putting them in the trash. Not one of them knew there was mercury in the bulbs

There needs to be more consumer education about these bulbs or we are going to have every landfill in the country contaminated with mercury

I have to wonder how many people are going to get in their car and drive to a disposal site for things like those bulbs. My guess is very few. Maybe trash collection companies should be mandated to provide special bins for them, along with other toxic materials & pick up those bins a few times a year for proper disposal.

Its true, no one reads the fine print when they buy these but there is some good info here:www.a... also earth911.org makes it easy to find places to dispose of it locally.

"Some contaminants are dangerous at exceedingly low levels, and the method and location of disposal can have a lot to do with the impact of the pollution."

The amount of benzoic sulfinide (Saccharine)required to endanger rats and human beings is much less than strychnine, benzene (ingredient in paint), or arsenic. But, I haven't seen any saccharine trickling into our drinking water, our air, or our food supply...

We have a problem with our government's lack of scientific integrity -- to say the least.

I read an interesting article recently concerning our sewers. A company is sampling sewer H2O for chemical content. And it was bad news across the nation. Large percentages (PPM) of drugs, chemicals and pesticides were present. I'll try to find a link that's open to the public.

I'm not sure if there is a link to a giant list in order of what they pollute. But here is a link for those polluting the most near you(can search by zipcode). And as this article from thedailygreen points out, make sure to search for those counties upwind of you as well.

Don't buy any products containing steel, iron, copper, gold or other metals. It just propegates the pollution.

This is something that should be right up there with nuclear war to be avioded. Most on the list were miners and smelters. Mining is by definition a destructive process that has a one-time-use-of-the-land philosophy. Jarred Diamond (Guns, Germs & Steel, Collapse) is deeply involved in finding a new definition that maintians the viability of the industries on that list.

We must work with industry to find a solution because if we don't they will just go some place where there are no laws and become worse. Displacing polution is not a solution.

The biggest single thing that MUST be done to solve the polution problem and a long list of other things is to reverse population growth. If we dont' do that by planning the population will be controled by disease famine and war. The reasons to oppose population controle are either greedy self-interest or archaic value systems. If you disagree with me bring it on. Message me if I don't respond to your comment.

A top polluter in the Southwest that gets no mention, I've mentioned it before, is Mexico. Dumping into the Rio Grand and stacks on the other side of the border that blows all kinds of crap into the USA.

And that's one of the places our steel industry might move to if we mindlessly atack it. This is a problem we have to handle and we have to do it right.

The most telling part of this article is that the biggest polluters all seem to be in 5 or 6 states that are Republican strongholds.

How did the republicans move all of those mines to their favorite states? You would think they would have just taken the ore while they had it out of the ground instead of moving it to another state.

Simple solutionĂ¢;¦ shut them all down. After all who needs copper, coal, electricity, aluminum, steel, plastics or any of the other products created by these companies? We can just import it all from China and let their country get more polluted.

We can't import electricity so how about we convert to solar & wind for electricity? All we need is land to place the wind machine & solar cells. That can be accomplished by denuding all of the open space in our national forests & national parks with wind machines & solar cells. Problem solved!!!

Everybody needs those things. One of the best moves to combat polution is to lower demand by controling population. Additionally lowered population pressure would have a positive effect on a list of problems.
