'Divide and rule' in the Mideast »
Posted by: jovial 7 months agoBoth Lebanon and the Palestinian territories are in crisis. Superficially, their respective problems appear very different, but, in fact, they are similar in more ways than one. The troubles of both Arab nations in large part stem from divisions deliberately engendered by major powers for their own ends.

Actually, every major power of the past that employed this tactic and others toward the end of building an empire or dominion over far flung lands ended up imploding under the weight of the debt the effort ran up. At $9.3 trillion and counting, we are fast on our way to proving yet again that history can either be learned in school or relearned from repetition of the errors of the past.
There are no dropouts allowed in the school of hard knocks.

This:
"Well done on your fair and free elections was the international community's verdict with the caveat 'Sorry, we can't accept the result. Hamas is, after all, a terrorist organization.' Worse, it then orchestrated a deliberate campaign to bring down Hamas based on bringing the Palestinian people to their knees."
is why I have a little trouble believing that the U.S. or any other nation has the right to tell other nations how to run their countries.
It is a tough, tough call. Just because a nation has a dictator doesn't mean that it's bad. On the other hand, does the U.N. have the duty to step in when a genocide is under way?
Tough, tough, tough issues.
Thanks for posting this jovial!!!

Don't you know divide and conquer is as old as Adam and Eve.
Satan used it on Eve in a subtle way. Then Adam seeing she had not died bit into it, as it were.
Mankind has using it ever since.
We now use it in a myriad of ways. Socially, economically, politically, racially...
The only way to truly beat it is to love your fellow man as you love yourself.
Do not do anything to anyone you would not want done to you.
Like that is going to happen. When man will sell out his friends and neighbors for a litle more bread.
Sadly Divide and Conquer id Bushes tactic as well. It has worked well as we have fallen into the quagmire of unmitigated war spending for no reason except corporate profits.
It's only natural that it is happening world wide.

The Israeli government, in order to further its own hyper-nationalist goals, rejects the legitimate national aspirations of its Lebanese and Palestinian neighbors. Since 1958 it has been the policy of the United States to support the Israelis in their suppression of their neighbors. This, more than any other single issue, lies at the heart of American inability to secure the cooperation and friendship of the various Arab states in that region.
Today the US consistently calls for both sides to adhere to "road map" to peace in the region, yet does not admit that the "road map" was designed to perpetuate the regional hegemony of Israel. But this nation cannot be the instrument of lasting peace until and unless we are willing to adopt a foreign policy independent of Israel's and to pursue solutions which recognize the legitimacy of all peoples.

"Yasser Arafat, ... credentials as a freedom fighter were never in question."
Certainly not to any Jew-hating scum like the author of this article. Decent human beings, however, felt that Arafat's creditials as a bloodthirsty, murderous Arab muslim terrorist were never in question. I'm glad he's dead. Hopefully, the rest of the Muslim Arab terrorists will soon join him in hell.
As to Lebanon and the liberated territories, since these Arabs appear to need to murder someone, better they murder each other than anyone else.
