And this is because of 9/11. The idiots. I didn't do 9/11! Why are you reducing my freedom. 9/11 was the result of our failure to follow George Washington's advice to mind our own damn business.

there was this band i managed back in the mid-90s and every time i see the crazy stuff that our govt does i think of one lyric that was something like "they say today's political climate is ripe - yeah it's ripe for a fascist regime" and at the time i wondered if they were right... turns out they were.

....."9/11 was the result of our failure to follow George Washington's advice to mind our own damn business...."

9/11 was the result of George Bush's failure to understand the security briefings he got after taking office. He was warned, he was told, he ignored the threat.

What else would one expect from an alcohol besotted, cocaine befuddled idiot.

        The rest is history.

Of course if we heeded G. Washington's advice/warning from his "farewell speech", we wouldn't have needed for George the Dim to get any "security briefings."

We do have other people taking care of stuff that Presidents can't understand. They've been there for a while now.

I'm missing the part about the "international passport".

It is funny that many of the same people slamming the current administration for not doing the "right" thing to respond to 9-11 -- including securing our borders are the same ones screaming fascism at any attempt to tighten the borders.

The Mexican fence is stupid. Requiring proof of citizenship, maybe not so much.

As for the school trip scenario, I would imagine the teachers or other group leaders would hang onto the important papers ...

and, it was always my impression (but I don't live that close to any border so I could be wrong) that the border people could ask for proof of citizenship whenever you crossed anyway -- whether they did or not.

I was always warned not to go to Mexico or Canada without a birth certificate.

Having children who are naturalized citizens, I've always felt (perhaps in error) that I'm a little more sensitive to proof of citizenship type stuff. At least 5 years ago, there were different sets of regs for native and naturalized citizens. The papers required for naturalized ones to cross the border were much more voluminous. This was twice a major problem for the socially obligatory trip to Cancun.

Mine were naturalized in the 1980's before any of them was four years old. They are now in their mid and upper 20's. It's something we never think about, but keeping papers secure over the period of time one is going to college, getting married, setting up households, etc. is not the easiest thing in the world.

Why would we need any internal proof of citizenship? We don't have anybody here illegally do we? George Washington saw clearly through time and knew what the world today would be like right?

              What an idiot.

Even in Washington's time, papers were faked and counterfeited. He even knew where foreign "adventures" would lead us. ...to 9/11.

Feel free to give up YOUR rights, please. The rest of us are intelligent enough to know what we still need

I used to travel often to Ontario with no problem entering or leaving. Sometimes we'd go to Windsor just to gas up on grand imperial gallons of BP, when the dollar was strong.

The knee jerk offs that are making decisions are true to their form. Create a flawed system, then complicate it. I sometimes wish the US would deport me to Canada...I don't have any proof of citizenship (my parents fouled that up). No birth certificate. So I'll just tell them I'm Canadian.

Once there, I'll tell them I'm French. Then English, German, etc. I've always wanted to see the world!

I can prove it's easier (and faster) to get false documents.

Geee...Do you think the bad guys know that?! What a colossal cluster fock.

The same little pointed heads that scream and wring their hands about big government, want to expand the bureaucracy. Once that's done, we can put the military on every corner to check our papers. It's been done before, people get used to it after a while. Even turn in their neighbors or family members for suspicious behavior. You must close the border first. This is accomplished by scaring up an unseen omnipresent enemy. Um...let's see...

The next thing, is to kill all the lawyers...

We will yet isolate ourselves from everything and everybody else. This is good?

Every analysis of 9/11 I've seen has said that all the information to stop it was there, but we didn't due to lack of common sense and/or cooperation. Many people have flippantly observed over the years that one can't legislate morality. IMHO, some of the security stuff proposed is a blatant attempt to legislate common sense. It's a nice goal; but if it ain't there already, then no legislation will make it magically appear.

FAIR trade relations is all we should be concerned with. This country is quite capable of being self sufficient. We really do not require the rest of the world to sustain ourselves. Free (fair) trade should be the only diplomatic solution with other nations. Trying to impose our values on others only serves to bolster resentment. National pride is powerful.

Well, one thing about an "internal passport" : it would be pretty hard to lose or have stolen. I'm not sure I would want the government doing ANYTHING to me that required a surgical implantation though. It's not like our government is particularly TRUSTWORTHY after all. Why, you might get one of these for your trip to Aruba, then come next election you could walk out of the booth not even able to REMEMBER who you voted for. See, that's the very BEST way to steal an election, right at the ballot box. That way, even the recounts and audits will confirm the outcome.

And, you will notice that Dr. Paul - again - voted FOR American freedom and AGAINST intrusion by the federal government. The thing that puzzles me: why would anyone vote for anyone OTHER than Ron Paul?

And on that subject - have ANY of the other candidates mentioned abolishing the IRS? No? Think about that for a moment. Pretty much ALL of your personal income tax goes to pay INTEREST to "the fed." Which shouldn't really even be in existence. If YOU didn't have to pay income tax, how much better off would you be, immediately? If you think about it, other than your mortgage maybe, your federal tax bill is the largest bill you pay every damn month. Unless you drive a VERY expensive car compared to your earnings. Or, you have a very creative accountant. (quick, what's his number?)

For the sake of our country, and for your OWN betterment, please consider voting for Dr. Paul. Thank you.

This has been an UNPAID political announcement.

Huckleberree mentioned getting rid of the federal income tax... and replacing it with a twenty-something percent "value added tax".

Cause they watch FOX and let the media think for them. The educational system no longer teaches our children to think freely. They instruct them to "follow" and conform. If they don't they will be "blackballed" from business and society. If you don't follow the rules of the elite, you will never achieve success. Believe me, I have experienced it throughout my lifetime. I am a non-conformist and will die one. Poor maybe but with a clear conscience.

Good clear thinking Joe..I too try to get in a nudge for Dr. Paul every chance I get.

I even went to the trouble to change my party alliance, so I can vote for Dr. Paul in the Feb. primary. I don't know if a write in vote will even work in the electronic voting machines, but I will find out....

Requiring ID at the border seems OK with me. However, any attempt to plant one into my body will get those trying to do so killed!

The problem I have with all this is; it will be yet another foot in the door to expand and exploit. Consider the current "contract" you agree to when you sign your driver's license. You forfeit your 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th amendment rights, you are converted from a living human being to a commercial entity subject to the UCC, and you agree to a substantial amount of "behavior" control. You can expect more of this sort of loss of rights, liberties, "privileges" and "immunities" (14th Amendment) than has been taken already.

A people who would sacrifice liberty for insufficient security, deserve neither. Ben Franklin

Many other countries have both internal and foreign passports. If you are a legal US citizen, what is your concern? If you are an illegal immigrant, pack your bags and leave now.

My brother related a story that when he was in college in the early 1970s, a German student visiting the U.S. commented that she was amazed that she could travel throughout this great free country without ever being asked to show her identification papers.

I am now reading that identification papers may no longer be required for travel within the European Union while the U.S. is considering national ID cards for citizens who travel within the U.S.

People who need permission for their actions, even if granted, are not free. Free people act by right, not permission.

Until the mid-1960s, we had open borders with Mexico. Mexicans were free to enter the U.S., work for a day or week or longer, then return home to their families and friends. There was no incentive to live permanently in the U.S.

In the mid-1960s, President Johnson brought his grand welfare society into existence, attracting non-citizens to come here to live. Then, we made it difficult to enter the U.S. Rather than risk being unable to enter, Mexicans (and others) thought it safer to just remain here where the work and free programs were.

Solution to our current illegal population mess: Open the borders once the welfare programs are eliminated.
