Media Consolidation: Cons and Cons

Do No Evil – Today's decision would make George Orwell proud. We claim to be giving the news industry a shot in the arm, but the real effect is to reduce total news-gathering. Rather than reviving the media, consolidation has led to less diversity of opinion and ownership, less serious political coverage, fewer jobs for journalists, and the list goes on.

It may not be as stark as actually canceling the evening news-it could just mean doing more sports or more weather or more ads during that half hour. But at the end of the day, the combined entity is going to have a huge advantage in producing news -- and the other stations will make a reasonable calculation to substantially reduce their investment in the business. This is why, by the way, experts have been able to demonstrate that cross ownership leads to less total newsgathering in a local market. And that has large and devastating effects on the diversity and vitality of our civic dialogue.

We have had a dangerous, decades-long flirtation with media consolidation. I would welcome a little romance with the public interest for a change.

I've watched as the identical AP story appears in all the major newspapers--and the story is generally a very opinion-based slanted one--not representing a variety of views. That's a real problem, especially since so many people are very busy and snatch their news on the run. Then the papers wonder why readership is down.

I wonder if the world will wake up one day listening to the same news in the same language at the same time?

Makes one wonder doesn't it. Seems that's been the plan from the beginning. One world. One government. One voice and the heck with any thing, or any one.

This is terrible. It's amazing to me how people recognize totalitarianism in the form of religion, (theocracy) or state(fascism or communism)but it's unopposed if it is in the name of corporate profits. Remarkable. We sumbit our airwaves and our minds and souls to clearchannel and sony. What a raft of s***!

Now I understand the article you submitted a while ago about the music industry radio.

I don't! I listen to NPR and C-SPAN, and very rarely go to the corporate media for my news.

Radio is leading the way on this. I remember 20 years ago we had a dozen independent radio stations in my area. Now they are all owned and operated by one or two corporate media outlets. It's to the point that calling in and requesting a song to be played is a rare event because they are piping the music in from three states away. Some of the DJ's are not even from my area and also are piped in along with music. This drastically reduces the information to just a few resources at best. If TV follows suit, you can bet information will be more easily manipulated for political agendas. The media also requires checks and balances which is what competition provides.

Deregulation of media has, like every other attempt at deregulation as forced through by greedy Republicans, has done far more harm than good!

Look at the current crisis in the banking industry! Congress wiped its hands of keeping an eye on their practices, and the entire industry is ready to collapse, just like it did in the 1920's! Unfortunately, Congress decided to bail out the banks, rather than help the people.

I used to be in radio as a DJ in the mid 80's, and the station is still owned by the small company, who owned it years ago. They were one of the few stations grandfathered into the original legislation banning newspapers from owning radio stations. When I left, our music was just starting to be programmed by a consultant instead of the local Program Director.

It's a shame to hear the same song being played at the same time period in two different cities. it's going to be the death knell.

Just in time for the 2008 elections. Take a guess at which side of the political spectrum these media conglomerates will align themselves. Next up...the internet; our last hope at keeping ahead of the cretins running the United States. Censorship by Bush's cronies has begun in that arena, also.

...all part of the Repug plan that started with Reagan vetoing the Truth in Telecommunications Act and today's repugs voting against the Fairness Doctrine... the results of which we see in the deceptions and lies of Faux Fox Facts!

This is just sad. We need to take back our government and make it work for us again.

Then you need to work to do that! Contact your congresscritters and demand they repeal the actions the FCC just enacted! If your state's being flooded by presidential hopefuls, and don't forget your congressional and senatorial candidaters, ask then what they'll do to put radio back in the hands of the people and NOT in the hands of a rich few!

Of course you knew Wolfie would sink the story. He and his ilk will only be happy when the only media option is Fox News... and Clear Channel.
