Merry Christmas to All. My daughter in a Manager in an upscale Chicago retail store. She has been there 12 years, and has never said Happy Holidays. For a couple years they tried to "correct" her, but she refused, and they didn't push after that. You cannot find good help at Christmas. Now they don't bother her. She is a good Republican too

Happy Solstice everyone. That's what it was before the Christians ripped it off from the Pagans. Oh, and another huge tidbit:
CHRIST WAS BORN IN THE SUMMER.

Well I'm sorry to deflate your "revelation," but its no secret to modern church leaders and most church-goers that the celebration of Christ's birth doesn't fall on the actual date of his birth. I don't know where you came up with his birth date being in the summer; I've always heard it was closer to April or May. Regardless of when it actually was, Christmas Day was never intended to be the actual birthdate.

Happy Holidays--by which I mean whatever it is that one celebrates around this time of year, I hope you enjoy it. Unless I know you personally, I'm not particularly interested in what your religion is (and even then, I don't care to discuss it unless *you* insist on bringing it up first).

LOL...Aniokly, bless your heart for giving me my laugh for the day. Only you would unabashedly beam with pride over the fact that you've raised a daughter who thinks it's acceptable to casually disregard one's employer's orders (over, of all things, the proper way to greet customers at the holidays) and who's only managed to avoid being fired because her attitude and job performance suck *less* than those of most people in her profession). I love it. ;-p

The holiday is called "Christmas". If people don't like it they need to:
A) Get it deleted as a National Holiday.
B) Refuse their Christmas Bonus.
C) Have their butt in the office on the 24th and 25th of December.
Otherwise, just smile and say "Merry Christmas" to people, I promise you will not suddenly find yourself wearing a cross and singing "I am a C...I am a C-H...I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N..."

See my above post about how Christianity ripped off Christmas from the Pagans, and how astrological records have proven that Christ was born in the summer. Please save everyone your Christ is being taken out of Christmas drivel. Instead ask your preacher why they continue to lie about Christ being born in the summer?

Toph,
Just about every holiday, tradition and Americanisms come from our Pagan ancestors, so you are right on track. The Bible is a good thing, because it teaches a growing society how to live together and harmonize and produce something useful to others and society. It has helped the growing masses be able to exist side by side without annihilating one another I believe.
But strong religion on the other hand has only done harm to our existence. It has caused most every war, countless deaths by cleansing, and has created absence of logic to those radical leaders in their interpretations of any faith and to impose those interpretations on it's minions, willing or not. If you look at any faith sensibly and logically, they all teach the same thing, how to live in harmony with your neighbour and to be peaceful.
I have faith the Bible teaches us with analogies of great lessons learned through many wise thoughts, it was not meant to be taken literally, like any religion.

"The holiday is called "Christmas".
--Exactly what hardship does acknowledging that not everyone you will meet on the street celebrates "Christmas" create for you? Really? What does it cost you?
"B) Refuse their Christmas Bonus.
C) Have their butt in the office on the 24th and 25th of December."
--Well, ok... But isn't it going to be a little inconvenient for you to plan your time around a given holiday when we all start dictating to one another the exact terms under which others are permitted to observe that particular tradition? I mean, let's say I want all people who love war to enlist in the military on Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays. That could create a conflict. Just wondering...

""Otherwise, just smile and say "Merry Christmas" to people, I promise you will not suddenly find yourself wearing a cross and singing "I am a C...I am a C-H...I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N..."
--Hmm...I want to trust you but I'm just not quite ready to accept the word of someone who's terrified of losing her faith if she says "Happy Holidays," to a handful of strangers for a couple of days out of the year. I wonder how stewardesses feel about this. Oh wait...They're called "flight attendants" now, aren't they? Nevermind...

They were flight attendants in the 70's, in the 80's they became Inflight Service Representatives (ISR's). ;D.
At least you didn't call them Hostesses... ;)

"The Republican Party is the party full of life breathing Bible believing Christians whereas the Democrats have given themselves to death:
death to unborn infants,
death to the biblical definition of marriage and family,
death to biblical morality,
death to America's Judeo-Christian tradition,
death to worship except for their own campaign political opportunism,
death to the biblical deity."

No one who believes in the Republican ideals can possibly claim to be a Christian. George Bush claims that only God has the right to grant life or death, then he backs the death penalty (which I'm not against... just thought I'd mention that), and starts wars killing hundreds of thousands of people. Jesus taught that we are to help the poor and infirm, placing no qualifiers on religion or political beliefs. Republicans say screw the poor and infirm, and I'm not helping anyone who doesn't believe just like me. Finally, ask yourself, WHO WOULD JESUS WATERBOARD?

The ironic thing about this 'story' is that "Merry Christmas" was NEVER 'gone'.
That hype was just that - hype, a non-story. There has been NO 'conspiracy' by ANYONE to 'eliminate' the free-speech ability to say "Merry Christmas" to people.
Stories like this are cooked up to divert attention from the SERIOUS issues like the war, the economy, poverty, health care, etc.

Bubba, Are you going to let Mr. Elephant get up long enough to check out his stocking on Christmas day? (;-)

Last Christmas friends that are employees of Sears and Wal-mart told me they were instructed to say "Happy Holiday", not Merry Christmas, so they didn't offend anyone. Well, it didn't work. I think a lot of people voiced their displeasure verbally or threatening to shop else where. It appears the store chains decided Merry Christmas was O.K. to say this year, at least that's what friends in my area stores tell me. Funny thing, the very people that find it offensive to be wished Merry Christmas are the first ones to sign up for those 2 weeks as vacation time at their places of employment.

I recall seeing a poll someplace online last year, where a number of non-christians were asked about it, and not a single one of them said they'd be offended. One guy said "I'm Jewish, but why would I be offended? It is Christmas, after all."
Funniest thing was, I worked in a night club owned by a Jewish guy. We had a huge Christmas tree, and a big banner that said "Merry Christmas" behind the bar. Probably 20% of the customers are middle eastern, no one ever complained about it. Like Bubba said above, "non-story."
