Another excellent example of how easily statistics can be manipulated to fit one's political agenda. With a clear difference between relinquished adoptions and adoptions arranged through the foster care system, it's difficult to believe that those who provided Giuliani with these numbers, and in fact the mayor himself, weren't aware of the discrepancies in his representation of the facts.
As stated in the article, the Western world has far fewer abortions than countries where the practice is forbidden. The quality education and contraceptive information provided in this country clearly has an effect; albeit under-funded.
We are sexual beings; the sooner our political and religious leaders accept this, the better off we'll be and fewer of them will live tortured lives, pretending they're not.
OMG- how did you guess? I suppose this is bad publicity. and, would you believe the person who invented the bloomin onion/Outback was a south floridian?
From what I hear they are loaded with fat, calories, salt, and probably a few days worth of calories. You would think with it being an onion it would be great for you though, right?
yeah, stay away from the bloomin onion or your digestive track will be bloomin in the toilet in about an hour.
the prime rib (ask for it lean) is the best bet. stick to plain baked potato, not too much stuff on top and a salad. make sure you eat some spinach with red meat or it will cause cancer and arteriosclerosis! don't need that. spinach cancels out the bad effects from red meat.
i have no idea how these restaurants can push such salty, greasy foods and people think it won't make them sick.
Hey! We love the Outback. It's about the only place we can go and depend on getting a good meal. And if something IS wrong, they fix it. I'd agree about the spicy hot grease soaked onion though.... best to leave it in the kitchen for the rats, they can eat anything {;>D)=
Ugh. I can never go there again. I had sweet tea and french onion soup one night before I realized I was coming down with a killer flu, let's just say I have not been able to drink sweet tea or eat french onion soup since. And just the thought of Outback makes my stomach church!
I could never have an abortion, but that's me. I plan to put my daughters on birth control when they are old enough, so that they never have to make a choice between abortion or an inconvenient pregnancy. And I will buy my boys condoms and threaten them within an inch of their lives!!! I'm hoping there will be some kind of oral or injectable contraceptive for guys by that time. I've already had "The Talk" with my daughter, she knows what we believe as a family both from a religious standpoint, and what we as parents would like for her, but she also knows that we understand everyone makes their own choices, and we will not judge hers. And realistically, we don't expect that any of our kids will wait until they are married, most people don't. So they will be prepared, no matter what.
don't forget, they have to use condoms AND foam. condoms alone only have a 90% effectiveness rate. many have small tears and leaks and the foam takes care of that.
The foam has also caused allergic reactions in every woman I've known who has tried it. More importantly, it ruined many a good time for me. Sorry, not a fan of foam.
I would never take birth control. I feel our body's natural hormonal balance is not something to play with.
the best birth control (and best orgasms) I have come up with is by the use my vibrator.
It's also the safest sex out there. but, having recently sepearated from the relationship I was in, I find it to be the best remedy yet.
because some of us women have very high sex drives. but, that does not mean go out and be fruitful. maybe some of you guys ought to try the vibrator method.
I'm laughing very hard right now.
but, statistics would be dramatically effected if we all invested in rechargeable vibrators. (batteries can get expensive and not very environmentally oriented)
I think the author summed up the issue very succinctly at the end: "Behind virtually every abortion is an unintended pregnancy. The sooner politicians accept that the only way to meaningfully achieve fewer abortions is to do better in helping women and their partners prevent unintended pregnancies in the first place, the better."
Does anyone with half a brain think that the problem here is education or access to birth control? Condoms are available everywhere at $0.75 each. And even middle school kids understand the relationship between unprotected intercourse and pregnancy.
The problem is NOT education or access to birth control. The problem is men and women CHOSING to behave recklessly.
So how do politicians get people to act responsibly?
Isn't it each individual's responsibilty to self police their own actions and behave responsibly?
The solution to unwanted pregnancies lies within each individual. The GUV doesn't need any involvement in this matter.
And the adoption figure of 14K/yr is way low. Perhaps the clown who wrote this was confusing one state with national stats.
Despite the fact that all your terminology is ambiguous, how can you possibly substantiate or justify such a sweepingly ignorant and short-sighted statement?
sure its a little general, but people on drugs, as in stoned, wasted, tripping, drunk or pixelated[computer age spelling?] generally don't act as responsible as when sober and are not in their right minds
after all, that's kinda the point of getting stoned, wasted, tripping, drunk and/or pixelated...
[its actually the left mind that is the more sober and rational hemisphere]
You're describing overindulgers of any sort. Same goes for greed or gluttony or piety. Moderation in practice is always a virtue, moderation in principle always a vice, right?
As regards recreational drug users, which I assume you refer to, particularly long term ones, you are just dead wrong on every point. EVERY POINT. You are extrapolating the symptoms of college binge drinkers onto drug users, and YOU ARE WRONG.
I did not say drug users, I said people on drugs, as in high, stoned etc.
Not drug users who are sober
You can argue that people who are high or drunk have equally good judgment and are equally in tune with reality, but you're just gonna look silly, not too mention that all the drunk women I could've slept with in my life who were way outta my league may disagree
You may as well argue that intoxicated people have equally good physical judgment, and say the highway patrol makes people do field sobriety tests just because its just so damn funny to watch while you're at it
No, I'm listening. If you actually read what I am saying, it is that because someone chooses to intoxicate themselves does not make them irresponsible in the slightest.
That's just a bunch of your own personal BS, and it's probably true for you, but don't go putting it on others just because you can't handle your own high without getting into something stupid or irresponsible, like driving a car.
All kinds of people have unprotected sex, you don't have to be loaded. And women that get pregnant got off light--they could've gotten AIDS, the number one absolute reason to use a condom.
The problem is with poor parenting and education and a completely misplaced belief in the effectiveness of abstinence based contraception.
If we as a society want to make up for individual cases of poor parenting and a lack of information or a stigma about the subject, then education is the key.
To answer your question directly, ryates, if it is each individuals responsibility to police their own actions and behave responsibly, then it seems to logically follow that it is society's responsibility to educate them as to what constitutes responsible behavior. No?
The whole time I was abstinent, I never got anyone pregnant or spread any STDs. After I stopped using abstinence, I became a statistic. The only way abstinence fails is when you don't use it.
Having lost my virginity less than about 24 hours ago, I can attest that is borderline impossible for someone such as myself to not get down to it when the time comes. I really couldn't say no if my life depended on it {and with the proper use of some condoms and a sexual partner who I have total trust in, it most likely won't} I mean, she's FREAKING GORGEOUS - still kinda riding a high from yesterday.

quick. very compelling last sentence.
DR this is an excellent subject. I'll be back.
went to Outback tonight. YUK. I have been ill since I got home. i was just being friendly since it was an invite. but, never again.
sorry for the diversion.
it was fried, salty, oooh yuk!
back soon.
bloomin onion?
It's a great diarrhetic.
OMG- how did you guess? I suppose this is bad publicity. and, would you believe the person who invented the bloomin onion/Outback was a south floridian?
So sorry, i understand, i HATE Outback too!
Being a vegetarian, I'd probably opt for the onion. Good thing I've never even heard of the place.
From what I hear they are loaded with fat, calories, salt, and probably a few days worth of calories. You would think with it being an onion it would be great for you though, right?
Well sorta ... I don't know what it exactly consists of so I can't say. : )
Deep-fried anything is baaaaad. lol
it's a huge onion that is cut like french fries and fried wtih a mayonaise base dip with hot spices. it was delicious. but, I paid for it. yuk.
yeah, stay away from the bloomin onion or your digestive track will be bloomin in the toilet in about an hour.

I actually got the salmon and steamed veggies. and, couldn't eat it after the onion. brought it home. now i should probably throw it out.
hate wasting...

DR-
sorry for the distraction, but you gotta admit: Outback sucks! (I will NEVER go to Outback again: N-E-V-E-R!)
Yeah, we'll get back on topic now!
I don't really have an opinion on the topic. Lol!
I could never have an abortion, but that's me. condoms and the pill are the best bet by far.
koranagirl-
i must be in the dark ages. (sorry) what is foam?
is this something used inside the condom?
Yeah, a spermicide. Same thing. I think it's most often in a lube form now.
The foam is what the woman must use about 20 minutes before anything happens. For more info
http://www.birth-control-comparison.info/spermi...
The foam has also caused allergic reactions in every woman I've known who has tried it. More importantly, it ruined many a good time for me. Sorry, not a fan of foam.
I have two siblings conceived with foam use, so I'm not really convinced as to its effectiveness!
I am grateful, however.
Sponges are all about the foam, and yeah ... used alone is not a good idea.
I would never take birth control. I feel our body's natural hormonal balance is not something to play with.

Way to stay on topic.
i did make reference to the "statistics"
come on Psycho...where's your sense of humor?
"yeah, stay away from the bloomin onion or your digestive track will be bloomin in the toilet in about an hour. "
LOL!!!!
true story.
Oops! I used the same quote - it appears below but was posted before yours..
Great minds think alike :)
sex education is needed. (with an emphasis on "safe" sex.)
therefore abstinance...the only safe sex is abstinance. then we could get statistics way down. even hiv #'s
Does anyone with half a brain think that the problem here is education or access to birth control? Condoms are available everywhere at $0.75 each. And even middle school kids understand the relationship between unprotected intercourse and pregnancy.

drug-users don't act responsibly. if people were "responsible" the statistics would reflect that.
'drug-users don't act responsibly'

I did not say drug users, I said people on drugs, as in high, stoned etc.

whatever. enjoy your buzz and watch where you put your privates. I know I do on both counts.
as for my own personal BS, read the rest of the thread, I put plenty of it on here :-)
All kinds of people have unprotected sex, you don't have to be loaded. And women that get pregnant got off light--they could've gotten AIDS, the number one absolute reason to use a condom.
While it's not the number 1 reason, it's one of the advantages of "using" a wife or husband.

A lot of those men and women are boys and girls.
ryates: "So how do politicians get people to act responsibly?"
By educating them? Who says that sex education must mean teaching people the mechanics of sex?
Ryates, well said. However I must say this to you. 42-30!!!!!!!! Go DAWGS!!!
Abstinance is not safe sex, its not sex at all.
