Now that the "anti-neocon counter revolution" (their words) has begun, maybe we can start supporting public education again.

A few years ago, a friend of our ultra-right governor got up and said he was going to "shut down all government schools!"

The Neocons wanted only Christian schools.

I suppose he wanted everybody to be as "smart" as George Bush or something...

    Those freaks are OUT.

    Education is back in.

Guess what the school kids are going to read about YOU in their history books, Georgie.

Her we go again blaming Bush for everything. I guess it's more important to have a smooth parking lot than to have teachers!

School Board members are elected. The board does hold meetings which are open to the public. Be at these meetings, learn and voice an opinion. If the board does not do what the public wants than elect a new board. If you can do better run for the board yourself. I know my father did just that. He went on to become board president for a number of terms. He finally quit running, there were too many people against him for things like wanting to pay our teachers the most of any district in our county so that we would have the pick of who was available or wanting to expel repeat offenders involved in violence in or on school property. That's the one which really got some of the more well known names in the community ******ed. (Wonder whose kids were going to be leaving)

Its about time we started electing school officials who realize that the goal of school is to teach the young and the one and only thing absolutely required is qualified teachers.

We don't need more parking lots, we don't need non qualified but elected people telling teachers how to teach. We need teachers who are trained and certificated and are allowed to teach using the skills we insisted they have before we allowed them into the classroom.

Though not a teacher their success is in some ways critical for me. I am a part time University faculty member and there is no way I can continue doing that if the politicians continue to degrade the quality of graduates coming out of the public schools.

How many of the freshman at the university must take "remedial" math or English before they can actually enroll in college level courses?

This is a local and state issue. Funding for education comes primarily from the local taxpayers (school district, city or county depending on the structure in the state) and the state.

If the people of Waterloo are upset, they need to take it up with local officials.

Federal tax dollars for eduction have largely been wasted. The Dept of Education has a huge budget but a large chunk of the money stays in DC to pay the employees etc. It is a very inefficient way to distribute money to school districts.

'Teachers fired, but the school has a new parking lot'

The way the teaching Profession has Deteriorated and the Results of their efforts has been so Poor, year after year,

maybe, just maybe, the Money is well spent on the parking lot...

All the So-called Teachers want is, More Pay, Less Hours, Smaller classes, More Vacation, (when is enough, enough)?..

Opps, I forgot, They also Expect a Big Fat Pension at YOUR Tax Payers Expense...

Now Really, wouldn't all workers want 5 Vacations per year, plus, Snow days off, and then, June, July, and August off with no Work to do and, Still Get Full Annual PAY... Is This A Racquet or What????

Get Involved in your school program, MAKE the teachers Earn their PAY at Your Expense...

Is this really a Bad Concept????

I tell you what. You try teaching for one semester with all the political pressures and standards they set for teachers and I guarentee you will change your foolish opinion.

You really think they are overpaid?

My wife is an elementary school teacher. She has a college degree and 28 years of teaching experience. She is paid less than $40K a years. Would you work for that money with that education? Yes they get a decent pension (not excessive) but after all those years at substandard pay don't you think they deserve it.

The problem with education is not the teachers its the elected officials with no educational background setting the rules of not only what must be done in the classroom but HOW to do it. Currently she is under mandate to follow a state program that says exactly what to teach, how to teach, and exactly to the minute how much time to spend. Matters not if the students are ready or able to abosrb in that time she must move on even if they don't know the material.

You want good education let her use the education she was given on how to teach avoiding the directives with class sizes see how quickly things improve.

the money to pay teachers and repave the parking lot come from 2 different budgets and sources--it would probably be illegal to use physical maintenence funds for salaries--not quite embezzlement but not far from it--this article also says nothing about their qualifications and also that they expected most to return by sept anyhow--ive worked with schools of all stripes for over 10 years and the competence of teachers is spotty at best--many are dedicated to their students..many are not and are tenured.. putting in their time till they can retire--we need to get rid of the stranglehold and monopoly the NEA and govt have on schools--somehow ATT cant be a monopoly put school systems can be--this has to change--i dont know where all the money in public schools goes to either--ive worked at public schools getting 12-14,000 per student and small private schools getting 2-3,000 per student--the difference between the two is not much--what happens to the other 10,000..?

Let me make another important point of what really exists much to the difference of many opinions here.

At least in California and a number of other states public school teachers do NOT have any tenure. Tenure is for college professors.

What teachers here do have is a right to due process. That simply means if they are not doing a good job you only have to document and show what is wrong to eliminate them. In fact during the first 3 years you don't even have to do that as you can get rid of them for any reason or no reason at all.

I don't think having charges against you defined and at least minimally proven is too much to provide someone before you eliminate them from their job. If you think differently then you should try working under those conditions for their substandard salaries, based on education level, before you deny them that due process right.
