Dec. 2, 2006, 5:14 p.m.Are there any energy producing byproducts that could be derived from this plant? Hemp can be converted into bio diesel. This is the only cash crop these folks have at this time.
It makes sense that solar energy was consumed in the growing of this plant and some method could be develop to retrieve that energy.

I agree about hemp.I dont know if energy from poppies has been studied but opium poppies are legal to grow in the US,as long as the intent is for ornamental purposes.

Dec. 2, 2006, 6:56 p.m.This could be turned into actual cost-effective medicine for poorer countries, if countries that are arm-twisted and lobbied by Big Pharma didn't prohibit it.
I'll ask two questions: How much is raw opium worth without prohibition laws? Why wasn't there a drug problem before the drug prohibition started?
Actually, the Diesel engine was first invented to run on hemp oil - no need for conversion whatsoever.

Another Bush administration success story! You people just don't understand the compassion this president has shown heroin addicts by making it cheaper and more abundant than ever. Why if our soldiers weren't there to protect the growth and production Afghanistan would still be providing nearly 0% of the world's heroin. Call it the Bush Economic Miracle.

Dec. 3, 2006, 7:08 a.m.It quite obvious we are doing a wonderful job in Afghanistan and Bush and Blair should be extremely proud of themselves.
Why here in the UK if you get sent to prison hooked on drugs you can look forward to a nice little payment of £3000 plus to spend as you wish when you get out, should stimulate the drugs trade marvellously.

Dec. 3, 2006, 12:03 p.m.The idea to buy up all the opium from Ahfganistan to use for the worlds legal opiate supply has been floated but pressure from the Bush admin on Karzai has killed that idea. The eradication plan is working SO much better.
